The attic playroom has just two small windows, so my main challenge was to keep things colorful and bright. To do this, I had more overhead recessed lighting installed and painted the ceilings and walls white to make the room appear taller than its sloping walls. A colorful fabric print used to reupholster an old ottoman and cover a lampshade brings a rainbow of colors to the room, as does a quilt made by my grandmother, and handknit bunting made by Great Aunt Jan of Spindletree in France. I also made a fabric collage of fabric samples in a rainbow wheel of color. Using a white rug provided a lovely contrast with the dark wood floor and created a comfy place to sit and play.
This colorful playroom serves a dual-purpose—it is also a tribute to my favorite filmmaker, Wes Anderson. I placed art prints of Rushmore, Life Aquatic, Darjeeling Limited, and various other Wes movies in matching white frames around the room and hung a zebra painting reminiscent of Margo Tennenbaum’s bedroom wallpaper. A Fantastic Mr. Fox print sits atop a white IKEA toy storage cabinet, and the bunting is evocative of Moonlight Kingdom. The dark yellow IKEA chair honors Wes’s extensive use of this distinctive color in his films, and a print of the great Bill Murray as Steve Zissou gets pride of place above a black and white outdoor side table from Target. Zebra print pillows and lampshades complete the playful theme.
