Here I bring you a showcase of do-it-yourself (DIY) creations with a creative aspect. All projects were completed by Grandeur on Grove and involved a range of project types and mediums. These creations served as outlets for expressing creativity, but many served other purposes as well.
There are instances of purely creative outlets that result in usable art pieces, such as oil painting and using fabric scraps to make an art piece. But sometimes, I DIY to create functional pieces for my home. Practical examples include a fabric bulletin board, fabric dry erase board, and wine bottle corkboard showcased below. I’ve also used chicken wire to fashion a vegetable protector for my garden and used power tools to refinish the top of an antique desk.
You might undertake a DIY project because you find it more cost-efficient to make something yourself. I took this route when attaching tile strips to make a mirror frame, when upholstering chair seats and ottomans myself, and when making paper greeting cards and paper table items for my wedding.
Another purpose of choosing the DIY route is that it allows you to customize pieces in your home to your taste, to coordinate with a specific room, or to try something new. Examples of this include adding fabric and ribbon to customize lampshades, painting frames to match décor, adding a pop of paint color to existing wall hangings, or taking a basic white IKEA dresser and giving it new life with ombre drawers.
Lastly, sometimes I use DIY projects to have fun. The toddler felt Christmas tree was a big hit with my son, who wanted to participate in tree decorating. Making themed birthday cakes is always a new adventure that makes his birthdays special. Using items in a quirky way brings me delight, such as when I hung antique transferware plates in a rainbow collage on the wall.
