This child’s bedroom has a rainbow and outer space theme to match my son’s personality. It has a machine-washable rainbow rug and star-studded curtains and bedding. There’s all the fun stuff: a book corner for reading, an edged table for building with Legos, stuffed animals, and several boxes of toys. The rug, bedding, and wall décor are colorful and fun and help brighten up a room that hosts dark flooring and dark wood furnishings.
Although the room is not decorated in a traditional style or filled with antiques, the sentimental weight of its contents satisfies my nostalgic tendencies. As the only grandchild on both sides of our family, my son receives lots of love and attention. His bedroom is full of personalized gifts made by talented and creative family members.
The toy box belonged to me as a child and Grams made its cushion. His uncle and Grandma designed the space-themed bed quilt and Grandma sewed the quilt top. Grams then finished the quilt, making it a cross-family cooperative effort. Grams also sewed the outer space wall quilt and Grandpa crafted the wooden quilt hanger. Grandma and Grandpa made the personalized bookshelf. A great aunt used her fiber skills to create the dinosaur garland and the wooly owl hanging from the quilt hanger. Great Grandad made the wooden train on the bookshelf and the two framed watercolor paintings are by artist Great Gran who painted them based on photographs of my husband in England when he younger. Finally, all other artwork is by my son. What a family collaboration!
This blue-gray bedroom can grow with my son with some grown-up curtains and bed linens. A later addition will be a refinished homework desk that belonged to his Great-Grandpa.
One decorative note—I hung the blackout curtains to accommodate a child’s room. Generally, I advise hanging a rod closer to the ceiling and using floor-length curtains. I used a shorter length here to keep the floor space available for play and to dissuade pulling and swing on the curtains. Roman shades would have been a feasible choice, as well. You never know what a little boy will get up to!
