The summer weather has been warm and it’s a holiday weekend. Many of us are stepping outside our homes and enjoying the outdoors. In that spirit, I’m straying from typical interior design fare to share some travel inspirations for your yard and garden plantings. I make no claims of experience or success in landscaping. Still, I have an appreciation for the knowledge, patience, hard work, care, artistry, and craftsmanship that goes into making and maintaining a beautiful garden. In observing the masterful works of great landscapers, I try to apply some common themes to my outdoor and indoor spaces. Let’s travel vicariously to some beautiful outdoor spaces.
Flowers are such a great way to utilize colors and try out new color combinations that you might be considering for use indoors.
I appreciate the extreme detail that goes into planning and maintaining topiaries and other manicured hedges. Like traditional interior design, this landscaping style is classic and often formal and symmetrical. The use of rows and long lines often leads the eye to an item of visual interest, a technique also used in interior décor.
The combination of lush greenery, vibrant colors, and aging stone buildings evokes nostalgia and grandeur. I especially enjoy the textural variations of stone and greenery as diverse as moss and wide fronds.
The visual shape and texture of willow trees, the color combinations of an autumn landscape, and the soft, velvety feel of a mossy surface are garden components I’m particularly drawn to.
My interiors abound with aspects of the outdoors and traditional landscape design. Whether it’s using garden urns, moss balls, tree iconography, pops of floral color, or layers of green in my décor, it’s easy to see the inspirations drawn from natural and cultivated gardens.
