While my interior decorating style is pretty staunchly traditional, with an occasional hint of a transitional or contemporary style, my husband’s style is decidedly contemporary and modern. His favorite colors are lime green and orange. When I can, I try to sensibly incorporate his modern tastes into areas of our old house. One place that worked well was our front porch because it’s not abutting a room with antique furniture. It’s contemporary, but not ultra-modern, and classic enough to fit our 114-year-old foursquare.
When we chose colors for our exterior trim, we went bold with Benjamin Moore’s Amazon Green and Eucalyptus Green. To coordinate on the porch, I went with white, modern, geometric, metal outdoor furniture with lime green cushions. The addition of a geometric rug and striped pillows brought all the colors together to create a fun, welcoming atmosphere.
The sharp angles and geometric patterns harmonize with the rectangular shape of our porch’s openings and honor the craftsman-style era of the house. Rectangles also appear in the tall windows and in the lines of the copper Craftsman-style lights. As final contemporary touches, the pendants, mailbox, and house numbers accents are also copper.
