Sometimes the inspiration for a room can be unexpected. The décor in this light- and plant-filled family room started with a cheerful coral fabric that was outside my usual comfort zone. But then, I found a coordinating rug in a small antique store in Marblehead, MA, being used as the store’s main floor covering. I’m glad I inquired after it, as it was not obviously for sale. It was quite an ordeal for the shopkeeper to move all the antique furniture to be able to make the purchase, but it was worth it.
Coral rug in hand, I could then play off its color palette to add blues, grays, and light tans into the room. The palette is distinctive, yet cohesive with the adjoining rooms in the open space. The dining room has light blues and greens and the formal living room has a slightly darker palette of similar colors: dark blue, deep gold, and rust.
Being a family room, it is mostly used for playing with toys and watching TV. Some of the functional touches include a couch chaise for putting your feet up and relaxing, toy and game storage space in the entertainment center, and flexible space for creative play (as you’ll see with the knight who conquered the ceramic vase in the photo collection below).
The room is furnished with a reupholstered chair in a coral and white geometric petal pattern, a Queen Anne-style chair that was a reupholstered housewarming gift from my parents, matching marble-topped ornate side tables, and an antique stained glass torchiere lamp.
Additional color and personal touches are found in throw pillows sewn by my mother on the couch and window-seat, tapestry pillows and wall-hangings, coral-colored floral and fruit paintings, and classic blue and white ceramics throughout.
