In this formal living room near the entrance of the house, a display of antique furnishings provides a cozy gathering spot by the fireplace. To create an inviting, yet formal space, I used a warm palette of gold, cream, rust, and dark blue. Velvet fabrics on the sofa and throw pillows evoke comfort and luxurious texture. Ornate table lamps provide warm lighting. An overhead stained-glass pendant sends down gold-colored light down that reflects in the sizeable over-mantle gold mirror. The rug’s dark acanthus pattern is a nod to William Morris’s prints of the craftsman era. The cream color of the mantle and the settee provide a balance to the darker shades of the rug.
We replaced a defunct, wooden-mantled gas fireplace with an elegant stone mantle and modern fire unit. Widening the old fireplace footprint and making it shallower added more useable floor space in the room.
The antique chairs, sofas, and tables of the room have beautiful wood carving accents. There are ornate chair legs, a wooden rosette on the settee’s arched back, and carved details on the side table, secretary’s desk, and coat tree. Blue and white ceramics, plants, and urns are additional formal touches in this living room.
