Going into this primary bedroom project, I knew two things: a reupholstered wingback chair with a red and green rose print would serve as the color inspiration for the room, and I was going to use grasscloth wallpaper to give the room a cozy feel. I wanted this room to feel like a warm cocoon and the texture of the grasscloth walls sets an enveloped tone.
This room hosts different textiles and fabrics to vary texture in the room. The roman shades have a satin sheen that contrasts with the natural fiber walls. The lampshades have a similar shine that is reflective against the light-trapping walls. The bed’s quilt is a soft velvet to contrast with the linen-wrapped king-sized headboard. The throw blanket is a sumptuous, furry plush. The grasscloth adds dimension, as each wallpapered panel is unique and subtly different from the panels beside it.
Adding additional coziness to the walls are a Tree of Life tapestry and a cotton and wool applique quilt beautifully sewn by my mother-in-law. These wallcoverings are reminiscent of the large tapestries used in drafty rooms of old castles and estates to keep out the cold winds and maintain the warmth of the fireplace.
Two unmatched, but similarly tall antique nightstands frame the bed. The brown wood dressers compliment the dark nightstands and serve as a warm visual contrast to the white wood trim of the room. The neutral palette of the walls and rug allow for red pops of color on the window treatments and bed linens. Some additional red-rose touches appear in several original art pieces and a cheery stained glass panel.
