With both a mother and mother-in-law who are avid quilters and late grandmothers who hand-stitched, I’ve benefited from the wisdom of these ladies in learning the arts of sewing, embroidery, and quilting. Many women in my family are avid crafters and makers, and I share their interest and pride in partaking in creative outlets. My artistic endeavors include machine sewing, cross-stitch, embroidery, oil painting, upholstery, furniture refinishing, mosaics, fabric collages, floral arrangements, and other DIY projects. Here, I’m focusing on sewing, and while my sewing skills are still at a beginner to intermediate level, I’m actively gaining new skills and slowly incorporating more advanced components into my work.
Sewing is an excellent outlet for incorporating my favorite colors, patterns, and prints into décor. I love to buy fabrics and coordinate them. I also like to make my own patterns. While I’d prefer to take those creative ideas and supplies and outsource the hard work of creation, I’ve realized that if I want my designs realized, I must create them myself. And, so I do, with a considerable amount of advice and assistance from the aforementioned mothers.
The pieces showcased here are a selection of table runners, wall hangings, throw blankets, and baby, twin, queen, and king-sized quilts, pillows, baby accessories, and window treatments that I’ve made. I’ve used a combination of embroidery, hand stitching, and machine sewing to assemble these items. Most are original patterns.
