Measured Drawing in Washington, D.C.

02.17.2023

As part of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s (ICAA) classical architecture certificate program, I traveled to Washington, D.C., to study classically-inspired buildings and learn measured drawing techniques. Measured drawing is just what it sounds like. It’s typically done in the field and requires the drawer to literally measure all the components of their subject and then replicate them in their drawing, modified to scale. It’s a great way to study classical components, motifs, and proportions of the Classical Orders of architecture and design.

My first measured drawing assignment was to capture the components of the base of a pilaster on the National Archives Building. In the picture below, you can see the chair I sat in to draw after taking my measurements.

We spent some time at the National Gallery of Art in the east wing courtyard. The lighting was amazing and we used the opportunity to do some free-style stretching (no measuring). Here, I am sitting by the fountain, capturing some of the stone details on this lovely doorway.

Back at measured drawing, I decided to study this urn outside the U.S. Postal Service and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency office at the Federal Triangle. Lots of measurements were required for the many layers of this urn. The detailed acanthus leaves and egg and dart trim made this urn especially appealing.

At the Freer Gallery of Art, we focused on measured drawing of architectural details. I found the metalwork at the bottom of the windows and the stone relief wave carvings especially interesting. It was also a great study in shading.

Measured drawing is time-consuming, extremely detailed, and requires more precision and planning than regular sketching. Still, it is an amazing way to study architecture and a great way to capture inspiration for future reference. It can be lovely to spend several hours admiring one part of a gorgeous building.

Lastly, I’m sharing a selection of enchanting architecture I viewed while walking around the capital:
